Stop the War

Let's Knock on a Million Doors for Peace Saturday 9/20

Million Doors for Peace A Message from Ned Lamont about Million Doors for Peace

Join us this Saturday, September 20th! Details below.

It has been five and a half years since the start of the Iraq War. Over the course of that time, millions of Americans have taken to the streets to protest this abhorrent war, holding marches and rallies all across this country and in its capital city.

But what about the majority of Americans who favor peace but cannot join us at a traditional rally in Washington D.C.? That is why it is time we turned the notion of an anti-war protest on its head, and instead of packing a million people into the National Mall, we knock on a million doors.

On Saturday, September 20 we intend to do just that.

Knocking on a million doors is easier than it sounds. All it takes is 25,000 people across the country to get out and knock on 40 doors each. So we are going to do a fair share of those million doors in Connecticut. Here is how you can get involved:

  1. Go to http://milliondoorsforpeace.org/ and register;

  2. Join us on September 20, 9:30 am at 1 of 3 locations:

  3. 1199 Union office

    77 Huyshope Avenue

    Hartford, CT 06106 [map]

    The Peoples Center

    37 Howe Street

    New Haven, CT 06511 [map]

    SEIU office

    777 Summer Street

    Stamford, CT 06901 [map]

    Training, materials, and refreshments will be provided;

  4. If you need more information, call John Murphy at 860-995-3389.

Chances are that one of these three locations is a reasonable distance from where you live, but for those of you who want to knock doors close to home, you're in luck! After signing up on the Million Doors for Peace website, you will be sent a list of voters to contact near your home.

So this Saturday, September 20th, join us in person at one of the three locations above, or join us in solidarity by door-knocking in your neighborhood. Let's knock on a million doors for peace.

Pain at the Pump: The War is a Cause of Seven-fold Increase in Oil Prices Since 2002

Gas prices are at record highs, and Americans are getting hit hard as we head toward Independence Day celebrations with our friends and loved ones. There doesn't appear to be any relief on the horizon, either.

Sign the Letter to Tell Congressman Shays the War is Wrong for CT

Recently, the CCAG Summer Canvass, CT Opposes the War, and Connecticut members of Iraq Vets Against the War rallied in Bridgeport before marching to the home of Congressman Chris Shays to deliver the letter below on behalf of the overwhelming majority of Connecticut citizens who oppose the war.

Congressman Shays has continued to support the failed war in Iraq, despite its mounting costs--both human and financial.

Read the letter, and add your signature below!

of Congressman Shays.
Dear Congressman Shays,

We, the citizens of Connecticut, emphatically object to your continued support of the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Bush and Cheney’s War in Iraq is wrong for Connecticut. It has cost our state over $12 billion dollars in the last five years not to mention its continuing cost on our failing economy, weak dollar and high gas prices. Over 70% of Connecticut opposes this war which has cost the country $3 trillion dollars. It’s time that we end the failed policies of the Bush Administration so that we can use our tremendous resources for better education, healthcare, and veterans benefits. It’s time for a change.

Bush and Cheney’s invasion of a sovereign nation without a declaration of war constitutes an illegal act of aggression and violence. Support for the war has led to over 4,100 servicemen who have lost their lives and untold thousands who suffer daily from the psychological terrors of overextension and under preparation. This is to say nothing of the millions of Iraqis, killed, maimed, or displaced after over 5 years of war. In addition to the dreadful cost in lives, the action has put all of our brave servicemen in a dreadful bind, stuck between following orders to fight an unjust, unwinnable war against the people of Iraq, or becoming criminals under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Over the past five years, you have publicly questioned and openly doubted the President’s woefully misjudged war policy. However, your voting record makes it quite clear you are not following through on the wishes of your constituents and your own better judgment. As a public servant, you have a duty to represent the views of you constituency, not the President and his political war machine. Your responsibility lies with us, your constituents. Through the continuation of the Bush administration’s policies all we accomplish is sending home more flag-draped coffins to grieving mothers and fathers.

The War in Iraq is wrong for Connecticut and wrong for your constituents. It’s time for a change, it’s time to end the war in Iraq, bring our troops home safely, and change our national priorities from a war based on lies to health care, jobs and proper treatment of our suffering vets. Together we and your neighbors will work to make this happen. The time is now.

Sincerely,

Protesters honor troops, urge withdrawal

Connecticut Post - March 20, 2008

TONY SPINELLI and PETER URBAN

A rainy, gloomy day just before the start of spring was the setting Wednesday for dozens of anti-war protesters around the state who marked the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq with pickets and vigils.

"We didn't want to have one single event in the state, so we had several of them around the state, and we'll continue this weekend," said John Murphy, a leader of Connecticut Opposes the War, a group he said has 50 member organizations.

The protest in Bridgeport at 10 Middle St., in front of Rep. Christopher Shays' office, drew about 20 protesters, including 13-year-old Eli Parker-Burgard, of Monroe.

"I was at a protest before, in my old state of Illinois," the young man said as he held a sign in front of Shays' office with the lyrics from a John Lennon song: "Give Peace a Chance."

"Constituents are always welcome in our office," said Shays, R-4, referring to the protesters.

Shays left for the Middle East Wednesday. He plans to visit Iraq later in the week for what would be his 20th trip since the war began.
