Dear Congressman Shays,

We, the citizens of Connecticut, emphatically object to your continued support of the invasion and occupation of Iraq. Bush and Cheney’s War in Iraq is wrong for Connecticut. It has cost our state over $12 billion dollars in the last five years not to mention its continuing cost on our failing economy, weak dollar and high gas prices. Over 70% of Connecticut opposes this war which has cost the country $3 trillion dollars. It’s time that we end the failed policies of the Bush Administration so that we can use our tremendous resources for better education, healthcare, and veterans benefits. It’s time for a change.

Bush and Cheney’s invasion of a sovereign nation without a declaration of war constitutes an illegal act of aggression and violence. Support for the war has led to over 4,100 servicemen who have lost their lives and untold thousands who suffer daily from the psychological terrors of overextension and under preparation. This is to say nothing of the millions of Iraqis, killed, maimed, or displaced after over 5 years of war. In addition to the dreadful cost in lives, the action has put all of our brave servicemen in a dreadful bind, stuck between following orders to fight an unjust, unwinnable war against the people of Iraq, or becoming criminals under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

Over the past five years, you have publicly questioned and openly doubted the President’s woefully misjudged war policy. However, your voting record makes it quite clear you are not following through on the wishes of your constituents and your own better judgment. As a public servant, you have a duty to represent the views of you constituency, not the President and his political war machine. Your responsibility lies with us, your constituents. Through the continuation of the Bush administration’s policies all we accomplish is sending home more flag-draped coffins to grieving mothers and fathers.

The War in Iraq is wrong for Connecticut and wrong for your constituents. It’s time for a change, it’s time to end the war in Iraq, bring our troops home safely, and change our national priorities from a war based on lies to health care, jobs and proper treatment of our suffering vets. Together we and your neighbors will work to make this happen. The time is now.

Sincerely,
